Definitely IVF. Its allows people to have children that they would not have been able to have otherwise. It’s the most incredible gift modern medicine has given humans. Women like myself with low ovarian reserve or with low fertility potential due to advanced age are allowed the opportunity to have children because of this technology.
Also, fertility preservation is amazing. Its like preventative medicine in that it allows women to have a better chance of conceiving in the future if they are not ready to do so now. And tied to that is the field of oncofertility. Men and women with cancer are often exposed to life saving treatments like chemotherapy and radiation that are also unfortunately gonadotoxic and this means that the crucial cancer treatments, although life saving, can also damage the eggs and sperm and reproductive organs and gametes making it more difficult and sometimes impossible to conceive with one’s own eggs and sperm. Fertility preservation whereby we freeze the eggs and sperm prior to exposure to such treatment allows people the ability to conceive after treatment with those frozen gametes in a situation where they were otherwise unable to do so. It’s the amazing field of Oncofertilty. Preservation of eggs, sperm, embryos, ovarian tissue in some situations best is prior to cancer treatment and then gives them the chance of conceiving later.
Also there are situations where someone may not have frozen gametes prior to treatment and so their fertility may be compromised and so they may be in need of fertility assistance at an age younger than they would have if otherwise not exposed to such cancer treatments. Offering fertility treatment to patients with cancer either before or after cancer therapies is one of my passions because it allows us to offer our services and expertise in a way that provides hope to individuals that otherwise would lose hope. Cancer is just so crappy on so many levels and to offer someone a glimmer of hope in the darkest time is such a great thing to be able to do.
Third party reproduction is another thing that I am passionate about. Being able to offer couples either same sex couples or heterosexual couples or single intended parents, the opportunity to have a child in a situation where they would have otherwise been unable to do so is very rewarding. Working with surrogates and egg donors and people who just want to build families so much and Intended parents who want to build loving homes for children who would not be able to do so without the help of our clinics, agencies, our field and the advances of our field is just so rewarding.
