Embryo Transfer

Beverly Hills, CA

Fertility Treatment in Los Angeles

Step-by-Step Explanation of the embryo transfer

Embryo transfer is probably the most exciting step in the in vitro fertilization (IVF) process. Dr. Diana Chavkin will perform your embryo transfer with meticulous care and precision to optimize the chances of successful implantation and pregnancy. She has performed thousands of embryo transfers over the course of over 10 years and has consistently maintained a pregnancy rate that is way above the national average. The embryo transfer procedure involves the placement of an embryo into the woman’s uterus through a thin, flexible catheter (kind of like a tiny little straw with a plunger). It is typically quick (less than 10 minutes) and relatively comfortable, often described as similar to a routine gynecological exam. The goal is for the transferred embryo to implant in the uterine lining and develop into a healthy pregnancy.

The Embryo Transfer Process

  • Embryo Selection: Our experienced embryologists, working closely with Dr. Chavkin, will select the highest-quality embryo(s) for the transfer based on their genetic testing, developmental stage and grading.
  • Preparation: You will be given specific instructions to prepare for the transfer, which may include having a full bladder to aid visualization during the procedure.
  • Procedure: Dr. Chavkin will gently guide a thin catheter through the cervix and into the uterine cavity. The selected embryo(s) will then be carefully placed into the uterus under ultrasound guidance.
  • Rest: Following the transfer, you will be asked to rest in the clinic for about 10-15 minutes.
  • Hormonal Support of Pregnancy: You will continue to take estrogen and progesterone (pregnancy hormones) to support the uterine lining and the developing embryo which will increase the chances of implantation.
  • The Wait: The period between the embryo transfer and the pregnancy test (the “two-week wait”) can be emotionally significant. Our team provides support and guidance during this time. We usually will perform the first blood test to assess for pregnancy about 8-12 days after the embryo transfer.

Frequently asked questions (faqs)

Is the embryo transfer procedure painful?

Embryo transfer is generally a painless or minimally uncomfortable procedure. Some women experience mild cramping, similar to a Pap smear. Most say they feel no discomfort.

While strict bed rest is not usually necessary, we recommend relaxing for the remainder of the day after the transfer. Dr. Chavkin will provide specific post-transfer instructions. Immediately after the embryo transfer, you will rest in the clinic for about 10-15 minutes. That day and the next day, you will be instructed to stay off your feet as much as possible (modified bed rest). And by the next day, you should be able to resume regular activity, barring any real exercise.

The number of embryos transferred is a decision made in collaboration with Dr. Chavkin, considering factors such as age, embryo quality, and your individual circumstances. We aim to balance maximizing pregnancy chances while minimizing the risk of multiple pregnancies.

There are no reliable signs of embryo implantation. Some women may experience mild cramping or spotting, but many experience no symptoms at all. The only definitive way to confirm pregnancy is with a blood test performed by Dr. Chavkin’s team.

Strictly adhering to Dr. Chavkin’s instructions regarding medications and lifestyle modifications are crucial. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and managing stress can also be beneficial.

If the embryo transfer is unsuccessful, Dr. Chavkin will review your cycle and discuss future options. A repeat embryo transfer with modifications may be recommended.
