Understanding Oncofertility

Oncofertility is a specialized field that bridges oncology and reproductive medicine. Our program focuses on providing timely and effective strategies to preserve the fertility of patients who are about to undergo cancer treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery, which can potentially impact one’s reproductive health.

Our Comprehensive Fertility Preservation Services for Cancer Patients

Dr. Diana Chavkin and her team offer a range of fertility preservation options tailored to the specific needs of cancer patients:

For Women:
  • Egg Freezing (Oocyte Cryopreservation):   Because chemotherapy and radiation can sometimes diminish the egg count in an ovary, many women choose to freeze eggs prior to proceeding with these cancer therapies. Egg freezing involves stimulating the ovaries to produce mature eggs, retrieving them, and freezing them for potential use in future IVF cycles. This is often a preferred option prior to the administration of chemotherapy but can also be offered after treatment has been initiated.

For Men:
  • Sperm Freezing (Cryopreservation): Men can provide semen samples for freezing and storage before starting cancer treatment. This is a well-established and effective method of preserving male fertility.

For both Men and Women:
  • Embryo Freezing: Embryos can be created with either partner or donor egg and combined with either partner or donor sperm. Embryo creation and yield is best performed prior to chemotherapy or radiation exposure but these treatments can also be offered after cancer treatment has already been initiated. The resulting embryos can then be frozen and stored for many years until the individual is ready to have the embryo placed in her uterus or into a gestational carrier.

Frequently asked questions (faqs)

How quickly do I need to make decisions about fertility preservation?

Time is often a critical factor. It is best to discuss your options with Dr. Chavkin as soon as possible after your cancer diagnosis, ideally before starting cancer treatment. But its never too late to have a conversation.

In most cases, fertility preservation can be coordinated with your cancer treatment plan without causing significant delays. Dr. Chavkin works closely with your oncologist to ensure timely and safe care.

Fertility preservation provides you with options for the future. Even if you are unsure now, preserving eggs, embryos or sperm, gives you more options for the future and may allow you to make that decision later on.

Success rates vary depending on the specific method used (egg freezing, sperm freezing, embryo freezing etc.) and your individual circumstances. Dr. Chavkin will discuss realistic expectations with you.

Some insurance plans may offer coverage for fertility preservation. We recommend checking with your insurance provider. And our clinic is happy to help you look into this as well. We are here for you.
