Semen Analysis and Cryo-Preservation

Beverly Hills, CA

Understanding and Safeguarding Male Fertility

Male fertility plays a crucial role in the ability to conceive. At Dr. Diana Chavkin’s experienced fertility practice in Beverly Hills, we offer comprehensive semen analysis to evaluate male fertility and sperm preservation (cryopreservation) services to safeguard reproductive potential for the future.

Semen Analysis: A Cornerstone of Fertility Assessment

The semen analysis is a fundamental test used to evaluate the health and viability of a man’s sperm. It assesses various factors, including:

  • Sperm Count: The number of sperm present in the semen.
  • Sperm Motility: The percentage of sperm that are moving and how well they are swimming.
  • Sperm Morphology: The shape and structure of the sperm.
  • Semen Volume: The amount of semen produced.
  • Semen pH: The acidity or alkalinity of the semen.
  • Other parameters as needed.

A thorough semen analysis provides valuable information for diagnosing male factor infertility and guiding appropriate treatment strategies.

The Semen Analysis Process

  1. Collection: You will be provided with specific instructions on how to collect a semen sample, at our comfortable and discrete collection room in our Beverly Hills location or at home. We will provide you with clear instructions.
  2. Laboratory Analysis: Our experienced laboratory technician will analyze the semen sample according to strict and up to date World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, and will provide a detailed report of the various parameters.
  3. Consultation with Dr. Chavkin: Dr. Chavkin will review the results of your semen analysis with you, explain the findings in clear and understandable terms, and discuss any implications for your fertility. She will then recommend appropriate next steps or treatment options.

Sperm Cryopreservation / Freezing

Sperm cryopreservation/freezing, is the process of collecting and freezing sperm for potential use in future fertility treatments such as IUI or IVF. This is a valuable option for:

  • Men facing medical treatments like chemotherapy or radiation that can impair sperm production.
  • Men undergoing vasectomy who may want to preserve their fertility for the future.
  • Men with conditions that may affect sperm quality over time.
  • Men who may not be available during their partner’s IUI or IVF treatment cycles.
  • Men who want to donate sperm

The Sperm Preservation Process

  1. Collection: Sperm is collected through masturbation at our clinic or at home. And in some cases, the sperm is obtained through surgical sperm retrieval methods if ejaculation is not possible.
  2. Analysis and Preparation: The collected sperm is analyzed and it is then prepared with cryoprotective agents to protect it during the freezing process.
  3. Freezing and Storage: The prepared sperm is carefully frozen and stored in our secure cryobank under optimal conditions until it is needed.
  4. Thawing and Use: When you are ready to use the frozen sperm, it will be carefully thawed and prepared for use in the chosen fertility treatment.

Frequently asked questions (faqs)

How long should I abstain from ejaculation before a sperm analysis?

The recommended abstinence period is typically 2-3 days. But depending on the situation, Dr. Chavkin will sometimes advise a longer or shorter abstinence period of time. Dr. Chavkin’s office will provide specific instructions.

An abnormal sperm analysis does not necessarily mean you cannot have children. Dr. Chavkin will evaluate your results and recommend appropriate treatment options, which may include lifestyle changes, medication, or assisted reproductive technologies.

Frozen sperm can be stored indefinitely without deterioration.

Sperm collection is typically done through masturbation. Sometimes, surgical sperm extraction is recommended for sperm freezing. This is done under anesthesia.

Coverage for sperm analysis and preservation varies. Check with your insurance provider to determine your specific benefits. Our office can also help to guide you.

Several factors can affect sperm quality, including lifestyle exposures (i.e. smoking, vaping, alcohol, diet), medical conditions, medications, and exposure to toxins.
