Tips for seeing a fertility doctor for the first time

  1. Gather your medical records and try to summarize your medical history in an organized way. Be prepared to tell your story.

  2. Be honest and open about what you want and your expectations. And be ready to hear honest opinions and advice that you might not be expecting.

  3. Be involved in the decision making process and make sure you understand what is explained to you. Ask questions. Make your doctor explain things to you.

  4. You may have insurance coverage for fertility treatment and for fertility preservation. Don’t assume it will break the bank and that you will have to pay out of pocket. More and more insurance companies across the country and definitely in California now are thankfully offering generous insurance coverage for care. So call your insurance company and look into plans that might offer coverage especially when open enrollment comes along.

  5. You don’t need much evaluation prior to coming to see a fertility doctor. You don’t need a specific work up and you don’t need to have tried for years and years. In my experience, the sooner the better. If you think you should get the advice of a fertility doctor then you probably should do so. Just make the appointment.

  6. Exercise and a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle is important. There are no special vitamins that will keep you fertile. But eating fresh organic fruits and vegetables will help every single cell of your body including your eggs and sperm.
